Krog Bar/Rathbun’s

I had a work dinner at Rathbun’s last night. Mitchell and I had been there a long time ago-way before the blog..all we remembered is how much we loved the lamb chops..but now I am comfortable writing a real review.

We arrived a little early and decided to hang out at Krog bar for a while. The place is tiny-but wonderfully intimate. All the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming-no pretensious wine snobs there! The food menu consists of cold food-we ordered the almond and olive tasting-perfect snack with our wine. The wine menu is separated into white and red..with a column entitled “If you like…”, where it describes the wines as fruity, spicy, dry etc. I am no wine expert.but I know what I don’t like. The waitress went with that and brought me samples until I found what I was looking for..great experience.

We headed over to Rathbun’s around 8:30. The place was pretty packed for a Tuesday night. We ended up sitting outside..which we liked because it is much quiter.

The menu is rather large. They separate it into small plates-to extra large. Seriously, all the plates looked good..but we had to choose. We started with the calamari–extremely tasty-and the eggplant fries-which is their specialty. The eggplant is fried and covered with confectionate sugar–accompanied by a spicy dipping sauce. Your mouth gets to experience every flavor.

My co-worker and I split the Greek salad and then the Halibut. The salad dressing had a little kick to it-which was fabulous. The halibut came with smashed potatoes and fried artichoke. It tasted great. The portions were still large-even though they were split and the kitchen did the splitting for us-which was nice. Short ribs were also ordered-with rave reviews. I did not try them-but apparently the meat fell of the bone and then melted in your mouth. Sounds good to me!

We had heard that the pastry chef was the man–and we heard right! The desserts were small portions–and you could order 4 for around $10–pretty cheap. We got the double chocolate cupcake, a fruity cheesecake, a bannana/peanut butter cream pie and apricot sorbet. All were excellent-and even though I am a huge chocolate fan-the cream pie really won me over. Delicious! You guys should really check this place out!
