Thrive
Jenny and I had a credit at Thrive since their grand opening in early 2007. We finally got around to eating there this weekend. Going in we had heard that it was a crazy menu with wide ranging choices from lamb chops to sushi to French onion soup.
Located downtown, its in a cool spot. Right on the corner of Marietta and Spring streets, close to venues like the Tabernacle, Phillips Arena and Centennial Park. The place was decorated a little to “chic-y” for me, but it was going for that Miami/Southbeach type of look. The restaurant was pretty dead the whole time that we were there for dinner from 8:15 to 9:30, but I don’t know if they were expecting such a light crowd with the number of waiters and waitresses that were working. The restaurant is distinctly divided into bar/lounge and restaurant.
The waiter was helpful with solid suggestions. We were pretty much starving and wanted to try a good amount off the menu. We decided to share an appetizer, each get a salad/soup and get a couple sushi rolls. The waiter was adamant about the calamari, which he was right on about. It was extremely good.. flavored with a spicy thai sauce I got the signature item on the menu, which is an onion soup that was served in an actual onion. It was decent, but not worth calling a “signature item”. It tasted like an extra flavorful French onion soup, but it was a total of 10 spoonfuls of soup. I thought it was kind of disruptful as they brought me my soup about 10 minutes before they brought Jenny’s seared tuna salad.
The sushi was pretty good. We got a spicy tuna roll and the Thrive Special roll with eel, salmon, avocado and crab salad. It was a good combination, Jenny really loved the spicy tuna as it was very flavorful. It was priced OK at $8-12 a “special” roll.
Thrive is worth a visit if you are in the area for a show at the Tabernacle or game at Phillips.
